Meet the Makers: A Celebration of Handmade Jewelry and Creative Journeys
‘Round the Mountain is proud to shine a spotlight on the artisans who pour heart, soul, and skill
into their craft. We are introducing you to three talented jewelry makers whose unique paths and passions
reflect the spirit of handmade Appalachian artistry: Susan Blansett, Martha Biggar, and Amy Tuell.
Susan Blansett: Inspired by Family and Fascination
What began as a moment of curiosity on vacation turned into a lifelong creative pursuit for
Susan Blansett. While visiting an art center with her sister, Susan encountered the art of wire-
wrapped jewelry—and was instantly intrigued. A chance meeting with an instructor led to her
first class, and from there, a passion was born. With continued learning, practice, and
encouragement from her biggest supporters—especially her mother and sister—Susan turned
her hobby into a meaningful business. Drawing inspiration from other jewelry artists, her work
reflects a love of craft and the joy of creative exploration.
Martha Biggar: Nature, Art, and a Lifelong Journey
A farmer’s daughter with a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and a teaching
certificate from Radford University, Martha Biggar has spent her life connected to both nature
and the arts. After teaching middle school art in Pulaski, VA, she transitioned into adult
education and, alongside her husband Ed (a glassblower), has been sharing her love of craft
across the country. Since the early 1990s, Martha has specialized in jewelry that draws on the
natural world—leaves, shells, and even doodles find their way into her designs. Her work
reflects both her faith and her belief in continual growth, always striving to evolve and improve.
Amy Tuell: Bold Color and Earthy Inspiration
For Amy Tuell, discovering polymer clay was like unlocking a new creative world. With its ability
to mimic natural stone or burst with vibrant color, this versatile medium captured her
imagination. Inspired by nature’s textures, patterns, and palettes, Amy’s jewelry is a joyful blend
of the earthy and the expressive. Each piece she creates is handmade with care, celebrating
the beauty of handmade artistry and the energy of color. Whether worn every day or for special
moments, Amy’s designs are meant to uplift and inspire.
From nature’s forms to vibrant palettes, from wire wrapping to polymer clay, these artisans
showcase the rich diversity of creative expression in Southwest Virginia. We invite you to
explore their work, follow their journeys, and celebrate the beauty of handmade with us.
